John & Grace Rieder

Shalom was founded by John and Grace Rieder. They served as missionaries to the Ivory Coast in West Africa for 36 years. While on the mission field, they learned the Gouro language, put an alphabet to it and taught the people how to read their own language. In addition, they helped translate the Bible into this language.

After the death of some family members, John and Grace moved back to take care of the family farm. This property had been in Grace’s family for over 100 years. Due to their heart for ministry, they decided to turn the farm into a retreat center. Soon thereafter, couples, families, and church groups began to use the property. Over the years, different work groups and supporters helped John and Grace develop the property and make capital improvements.

More than two decades have passed since the founders of Shalom started inviting people to come and enjoy this place of peace. It has been blessed to host summer camps for hundreds of children, leading some to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ, and challenging all to grow as a disciple of Christ. Shalom offers use of all its facilities on a donation basis. This has enabled underprivileged children and others to be a part of this unique ministry. Many people have come to know the Lord and have grounded themselves to face the temptations of today’s society as a result of this ministry.

Grace went to be with the Lord in 2011 and John in 2018 at 103! Their hospitality and focus on Christ will always inspire us as we continue to welcome and serve guests.
